Compared to healthy children, those with asthma have an increased risk of illness and severe complications due to influenza. In addition, children with asthma are more likely to visit the doctor when infected with influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has long recommended that children with asthma receive annual influenza vaccination to help protect against severe complications that can arise from this disease, yet despite these recommendations estimates show that just one-third of children with asthma are vaccinated each year.
